Making Disclosure A Reality For Healthcare Organizations

New Research Paper on Disclosure in Medical School Curriculum by Sorry Works!

Sorry Works! is proud to announce the open-access publication of a new research paper on disclosure and apology in the medical school curriculum. "Measuring the Uptake of Disclosure and Apology in the American Medical School Curriculum" was recently published in the April version of The Journal of Medical Education and Curricular Development, a Sage Journal.

The paper was authored by Sorry Works! Founder and President Doug Wojcieszak, MA, MS.  This first-of-a-kind research project surveyed deans/curriculum leaders of American medical schools (MD & DO) as well as 4th year medical students on the prevalence of disclosure & apology in the curriculum.  The surveys showed that disclosure and apology is being taught in American medical schools, but it is a work in progress. Some schools appear to teach the topic well, while others are just getting started (or have yet to get started).  Moreover, there appears to be some differences of perspective between deans/curriculum leaders and students, with future physicians expressing strong interest in how cases are resolved with "sorry."  Deans/curriculum leaders and students were asked open-ended questions concerning their opinions and feelings on disclosure and apology, and the paper provides a summary of these responses, which people in our field will find interesting and insightful.

Here in the link for this open-access article.   Please forward and share with colleagues.

This fall, Sorry Works! will continue work on this topic by conducting a deeper dive into eight (8) medical schools in the survey who claimed to be doing a great job on teaching disclosure and apology.  We will interview faculty and students at these institutions as well as review course content and other materials.  Our goal is to develop recommendations for national teaching standards on the topic of disclosure and apology in American medical schools.  We have raised approximately $5K for this project, but need more funding.  To make a donation today to this research project, click on this link.

Sincerely,

- Doug
