Making Disclosure A Reality For Healthcare Organizations

Tyson Horton Story Recap: Child Injured by Medical Errors; Family Hurt by Legal Games

During early to mid-summer, we published the five-part story of Tyson Horton, an Oregon teenager forever changed by medical errors. Tyson's Mom, Lori, freely shared the story, and Tyson himself provided closing thoughts for our series.

This is a powerful narrative that medical, insurance, and legal professionals should read and understand.  In short, a wrong-side surgery -- a never event -- killed Tyson's liver and required a transplant followed by the hospital doing everything possible to avoid financial responsibility by dragging the family through the court system for seven years. The mistreatment of Tyson and his family by America's medical, insurance, and legal systems should be required reading for all students studying medicine, nursing, the law, and insurance.  This is not how anyone should want to conduct medicine or operate a hospital, law practice, or insurance company.

Now, we know summer is time for vacations and extra busy schedules that distract many of us from work.  With fall here we are re-touching people with Tyson's story.  Here are the links for Tyson's story:

Please spend time to read this story, and please forward this e-newsletter so others can learn from this tragedy.  Medical errors will be always be part of medicine; however, we can and should eliminate the games played with families post-event.  Please remember Tyson's story the next you contemplate how to handle an adverse medical event.

Sincerely,

- Doug
