Research: Disclosure & Apology Improves Staff Satisfaction, Reduces Turnover
Recently published research shows that the presence of Disclosure & Apology -- also known as CANDOR -- in acute healthcare organizations improves staff satisfaction and reduces turn over. The data in this study reinforces what many disclosure advocates have said for years, namely that disclosure & apology makes healthcare organizations the employer of choice. Instead of blaming and shaming staff and covering up events from consumers, transparent healthcare organizations not only reduce lawsuits and litigation expenses but their clinical staff feel better about their work space and exhibit more loyalty to the organization.
In a news article about this research, Sorry Works! Founder Doug Wojcieszak stated that the findings of this research, which were derived from acute organizations, are also important for long-term care/senior living organizations which have historically struggled with shame & blame cultures and high turnover.
Disclosure and apology...it's not just about litigation reduction or patient safety, but also about making our clinical staff feel better about their jobs and their employers, which positively feeds back into litigation reduction, patient safety, and improving the bottom line of your organization, be it acute or long-term care.
