LAC+USC Medical Center -- Changing Culture Case by Case Series
Over the last 18+ years, I have had privilege of visiting countless hospitals and nursing homes/senior living facilities across the United States to share the message of disclosure and apology. It's been an absolute privilege. Occasionally, I get to visit some of these organizations multiple times and develop deep, meaningful friendships. LAC+USC Medical Center in Los Angeles is at the top of that list. I have been so lucky to have numerous engagements with them over the years, and I have learned much working with them. Dr. Bob Israel, who is an LAC+USC physician and Sorry Works! board member, pushed and encouraged me to increase the use of cases in my presentations and training seminars. Bob's mentorship enormously enhanced the effectiveness of my teaching and advocacy.
Last week, I got to my visit my LAC+USC friends again, and this time they invited me to record a session of their patient safety webinar, "Changing Culture Case by Case." The webinar was hosted by Dr. Allision Luu, MD, and Dr. David Chung, MD, who are both patient safety officers with LAC+USC Medical Center. The three of us had a terrific discussion about what transparency and accountability looks like post-event. We reviewed cases and stories, and talked about grief. In particular, we talked in-depth about the need for physicians and nurses to continue providing care for grieving families. Indeed, the care continues even after the stethoscope and prescription pad are no longer of use. Well, I don't want to steal our thunder...here is the video link. This is an incredibly valuable safety video for front-line clinicians, managers, and c-suite...please share with colleagues and friends.
Cheers,
- Doug
