Paralyzed Microsoft Designer Who Worked With Hospital Dies
Sorry Works! readers were introduced to Mr. August de los Reyes back in 2016 after a hospital misdiagnosed his back fracture which led to paralysis and confinement in a wheel chair. August and the hospital settled on $20M for his permanent injuries, but he was not done with the hospital. A top designer with Microsoft, August teamed up with the hospital and formed a partnership to improve patient safety.
August's inspirational story is a wonderful example of what can happen when healthcare organizations and their attorneys remain engaged with consumers post-event and expand their thinking of how to resolve cases. Yes, August was due financial compensation because of the devastating nature of his injuries...sorry is not authentic or real if the financial needs of a patient or family are not fairly fulfilled. The real resolution, however, to this case came in the form of the partnership that August formed with the hospital to improve patient safety. The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that August passed away shortly before Christmas due to COVID-19. He leaves behind a husband and family. Our deepest sympathies to August's family. His impact can live on by sharing this story and encouraging attorneys and claims people to remember August as they work to resolve cases.
